Out-toeing

Overview
Out-toeing occurs when the feet point outward while walking. It can appear in childhood but may also result from structural or muscular issues.
Causes
Hip or knee external rotation
Weak lower limb muscles
Bone abnormalities
Risk Factors
Children’s growth stage
Sports injuries
Symptoms
Feet turned outward when walking
Wide stance gait
Fatigue after walking or standing
Complications
Knee degeneration
Spinal compensation
Unsteady posture
Diagnosis
Clinical examination
Gait analysis
Prevention & Home Care
Supportive footwear
Stretching and strengthening exercises
Management
Management of out-toeing includes physiotherapy and gait retraining to improve posture and balance. Custom-made orthotic insoles help realign the feet, reduce abnormal pressure on joints, and support proper movement. In rare severe cases, corrective surgery may be considered.
